Absorbs 4x Its Own Weight

Hemp is 75% cellulose and is a natural absorbent. The perfect material to keep your animal dry and happy. Yes, that’s right — four times its weight, compared to 2X for wood and paper products. This means you need to clean and change bedding less often.

Reduces Odors

When hemp bedding is used, urine goes straight to the bottom, keeping the surface clean and dry. Odors become trapped under the surface, reducing ammonia and other odors much better than wood chips or sawdust. Reducing odor helps control flies and makes a more pleasing environment for you and your animals. Perfect for a barn full of horse stalls or your backyard chicken coop!

Low Dust Means Improved Air Quality

Dust compromises the quality of air for your animal and can easily lead to breathing complications. Hemp bedding offers a low-dust environment, crucial for the health of your animals. It has air pockets and excellent heat retention properties when compared to sawdust or pine shavings.

Biodegradable = Better for Animals and Planet

Hemp bedding degrades faster than most animal care products such as wood shavings and sawdust. Perfect for your garden compost. Support sustainable farming practices and help create a larger demand for Hemp. The earth and economy will thank you for it.

Q & A

What would be the cost savings that is being promoted with this product at $33 per 30# bag versus the pelleted bedding we purchase now at $6.99 per 40# bag? We keep the stalls (14x14) pretty clean so our current shavings can last a month. If it would be the same for the hemp shavings, in what way do they become more cost effective? Thank you! Debi asked on February 10, 2024

Debi, I apologize for the delay. We have been very busy getting the new plant going and have neglected the website questions. I'll have to refer you to our head of sales for that question: eric@odhemp.com.

Thank you for your interest in Dominion Hemp!

What is the difference between your hemp bedding for horses and your hemp bedding for small animals, such as rats? Is the substrate sizing different? Amber asked on January 3, 2024

Hi, Amber. There's no difference in the bedding. It's just the size of the bag. But that is a good suggestion. If having a smaller size for smaller animals is something that would be better, we should probably be doing that. I will pass this on to Marty. Thank you!

I’m new to hemp bedding but just swapped to your product. I’ve seen some people wet down their hemp stalls, is this advisable or is it not supposed to be wet down? Anna Sasser asked on November 5, 2023

Anna, I've been advised that you DO NOT want to wet down hemp hurd. You only wet down a hemp compressed crumble. Thanks, Josh

How long can a bag of hemp bedding be stored before use? We’re thinking of ordering a pallet but it might take us 2-3 years to go through that much hemp. Will it still be good in 3 years? Rich asked on October 2, 2023

Rich, I apologize for the late reply. several questions got dumped to spam and yours was one. Yes, the hemp should be good for 2-3 years, as long as it's stored in a cool, dry place.

How much bedding do you need for a 12x12 horse stall with comfort mattress food. Just need to cover not add cushioning Kathleen Tonnacliff asked on February 20, 2023

Thank you for the question. One bag will give you the bare minimum coverage for a 12x12 stall. Our 33-pound bag will cover 11 cubic feet at 1-inch depth. With 3 bags you will start to get good depth. We appreciate the question and support.

At Dominion Hemp, we understand that hemp and hemp bedding are relatively new products to many people. We hope these frequently asked questions and information help educate you about our incredible product.

Is Dominion Hemp bedding made from fiber hemp stalks, CBD plant stalks, or grain stalks?

Our hemp bedding is made from fiber hemp stalks. Fiber hemp is typically more mature and absorbent than CBD or grain hurd. Hurd is the material we use for the hemp bedding.

How many bags do I need for an 8' x 6' Chicken coop?

One to two bags will cover the hen boxes and an 8' x 6' chicken run. Please see our application chart on our hemp bedding for chickens page.

How many bags do I need for a 12' x 12' horse stall?

One 33 pound bag will cover 11 cubic feet at a one-inch depth; most of our equine clients use three to five bags, adding one bag every 7-10 days to replace the soiled material.

Please see our hemp bedding for horses page for application options.

Can I use my spent/soiled hemp for composing or spread it into my field?

Yes, we have many clients that use the soiled hemp for composting. Hemp is biodegradable and does not have the acidity of pine shavings.

There seems to be black dust in our hemp bedding. Is this dust?

No, this is called the fines of the hemp hurd. This micro-material is great for absorption and will not become airborne.

Do you sell pallets of material?

Yes, we can accommodate FTL orders at a time. If you are interested in a quote, please email sales@odhemp.com.

What other material is in the bag, other than hemp hurd?

Our hemp bedding is 100% hemp hurd. We do not add any other material to our hemp bedding.

Are there any pesticides or herbicides in the hemp?

No, the material we received from the EU is grown without pesticides.

If my animal eats the hemp, will it harm them?

Your pet may initially nibble at the hemp bedding out of curiosity; this is common with many animals. They quickly lose interest. Hemp hurd is part of the plant but not appealing to many animals’ palettes.

If you notice your pet is eating abnormal amounts of their bedding, there could be an underlying issue, and you should contact a veterinarian.

We own goats and alpacas. Is the hemp bedding safe for them?

Yes, we have goat and alpaca breeders that use our hemp bedding.

If my pet eats the hemp, will they get high or fail a drug test?

This is our favorite question; the answer is NO. There is no THC in our hemp bedding.

How do I become a distributor?

Contact us at sales@odhemp.com.

I do not have a distributor in our area. How do I purchase?

You can buy hemp bedding directly from Dominion Hemp or Amazon.com. We will soon be available on Chewy.com. If you would like to contact us with your favorite pet store, we will contact them about carrying our hemp bedding.

I’ve used multiple types of bedding in my chicken coop and this product is by far the best. I’ve recommended it to many chicken owners. My coop stays cleaner and dryer and very little smell. I add herbs to it weekly and it has been great. Thank you for producing a product that really works.

Hemp is the best bedding for chickens! More absorbing means a cleaner coop and less odor. I buy two bags a year and do a layering system. Cleaning the coop daily with a litter scoop helps stretch its life. The girls love it and so do I. Old Dominion is excellent at getting the order out and prices are competitive. Shipping cost which is not their fault is yucky but product is worth it to me.

This is an all around excellent substrate for keeping my silkies dry, warm and comfy! Absolutely NO smell or dust either!!! (Well I guess maybe a very pleasant earthy smell) Even after 2 weeks, there’s no chicken poo smell or even any moisture! I will be a very long term customer going forward!!!

I have an allergy to pine and the pine shavings were getting to me after just 1 week with the chicks. I had to grin and bear it for an other week while we researched waited for our order to arrive. There is no dust in the bale of hemp. the chicks can and do in scratching turn it in to dust and do bath in it so I cant wait for them to go to the coop but I'm very happy and will be getting more for our new coop we are building. We will be using the deep litter method in our coop too. If you want to watch our progress: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xtk-wiaCI4w

Have loved OD hemp bedding since adding it as the primary bedding for all the ducks, geese and chickens. It is soft and absorbent. Less dust than pine shavings and also helps keep odors down. The eggs have been cleaner for collecting since switching to hemp. Would highly recommend!!

Old Dominion is the pinnacle of hemp bedding. I love this company and they're customer service. The only downside is I wish I could buy it locally. I hate paying the shipping cost but it's so worth it. Low dust, smells great, very soft for my girls and when it's time to clean out the coop, it goes right to my garden to make rich soil. Thank you for your awesome product. I bought hemp bedding through another company before and the quality just isn't the same. Thank you Old Dominion!👍👍😎

Dude, I’m so so so allergic to hey, and alfalfa. Apparently my chickens too, the problem is, I didn’t know until we jumped into chicken owning. This is the best bedding I’ve used hands down. Keeps smell down, absorbs anything you throw at it, doesn’t bother my allergies, and it’s small enough to sift through a litter scooper. If your on the fence, pull the trigger. This is the best bedding you can get for so many reasons. Old dominion hemp is doing it right! Pics below are 3ish weeks apart. The first picture is the one without the heater and lights in it. I’ve done some light duty poo pick up and turned the bedding once. Still pretty much brand new.

I'm using this for deep litter in my chicken coop and I've been super impressed! This is my secord order. The first lasted me almost a year. My only regret was mixing in other bedding so I started fresh and I'm going strictly hemp indoors. I moved the old stuff out back to the pen and it's still going strong. Yes, it is a lot pricier than pine shavings but the quality isn't even comparable. It's low dust, super absorbent and lasts forever. I bet I'll get 2+ years building up on this latest order. That's 2 years of happy, healthy chickens in a low odor coop. My chicken to sq ft ratio is generous so ymmv but I'd reccomend it for anyone doing deep litter!

Love the product and the price! However, I am not happy that it is out of stock with no ability to be notified when it returns. The smaller bags aren’t nearly as well priced so I guess I’ll be waiting…

I received the Hemp Bedding promptly. I am going to use this in the spring & summer on my raised garden bed. Hoping it will help keep moisture in and the sun off my compost and worm castings. I live in Texas and it gets hot. Will let you know how it works. January 30 2022, well I cleaned off my garden bed added a couple inches of fresh compost and some worm castings and topped it off with your hemp. I absolutely love the hemp! I will definitely be a repeat customer. Thanks John Jarrell

This is only bedding I use for my chickens. I love it because it's mess free, no dust and it absorbs everything. My chickens love it because it's soft on their feet & butts in the nesting boxes. It also makes their coop smell good, because it absorbs all the poop. It's easy to turn over and really easy to clean out. It also compost into dirt when I clean out the coop in the spring & fall. It acts as insulation in the winter & keeps things cool & dry in the summer.

I love the bedding inside my chicken coop area where my girls are at night. I use a scooper everyday to clean their waste. I only have to change the litter a couple times a year. Best part, no smell!

Deep little for 5 chickens. Lasts 6 months. Could go longer if I added to it but I just change it twice a year. Better than pine and not toxic for the birds
